How a Reciprocating CO₂ Compressor Works
At the heart of every machine in this range lies the reciprocating piston mechanism — the same fundamental principle that has driven industrial gas compression for over a century, now refined with modern metallurgy, precision-machined clearances, and computer-optimised valve timing. On the suction stroke, the piston retracts within its cylinder, drawing low-pressure CO₂ past the suction valve. As the piston advances on the compression stroke, the gas is compressed against the closed discharge valve until the cylinder pressure overcomes the downstream line pressure, at which point the discharge valve opens and the compressed gas exits to the interstage cooler or directly to the delivery header.
Multi-stage configurations are essential at higher pressures. A CO₂ compressor operating at 32 MPa outlet typically achieves that pressure through three to five compression stages, with intercooling between each stage to maintain volumetric efficiency and prevent thermal degradation of seals and lubricants. The cylinder bore-to-stroke ratios are individually calculated for each stage so that the pressure ratio per stage remains within the optimal window, typically 2.5:1 to 4:1, keeping cylinder temperatures manageable and reducing the risk of gas leakage past piston rings.
